چکیده

On compressing low-density amorphous ice (LDA) at 125 K up to 1.6 GPa two distinct density steps accompanied by heat evolution are observable in pressure-density curves. Samples recovered to 77 K and 1 bar after the first and second step show the X-ray diffraction pattern of high-density amorphous ice (HDA) and veryHDA (VHDA), respectively. The compression of the once formed HDA takes place linearily in density up to 0.95 GPa, where non-linear densification and HDA→VHDA conversion is initiated. This implies a stepwise formation process LDA→HDA→VHDA at 125 K, which is to the best of our knowledge the first observation of a stepwise amorphous-amorphous-amorphous transformation sequence. We infer that the relation of HDA and VHDA is very similar to the relation between LDA and HDA except for a higher activation barrier between the former. We discuss the two options of thermodynamic vs. kinetic origin of the phenomenon.

Phase diagram of amorphous solid water: low-density, high-density, and very-high-density amorphous ices.

We calculate the phase diagram of amorphous solid water by performing molecular dynamics simulations using the extended simple point charge (SPC/E) model. Our simulations follow different paths in the phase diagram: isothermal compression/decompression, isochoric cooling/heating, and isobaric cooling/heating. We are able to identify low-density amorphous (LDA), high-density amorphous (HDA), and...

Electronic structures and hydrogen bond network of high-density and very high-density amorphous ices.

Electronic structures of hexagonal ice (ice Ih), high-density amorphous ice (HDA), and very high-density amorphous ice (VHDA) are investigated using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) at 77 K under a pressure of 0.1 MPa, focusing on band structure, density of states (DOS), partial density of states (PDOS), and electron density. It is found that the integration intensity of the O-2p bondi...

The high-frequency reorientation dynamics of O–H bonds is investigated in various amorphous ices including eHDA (expanded high density amorphous ice), LDA-II (low density amorphous ice II) and HGW (hyperquenched glassy water) using H-NMR spin–lattice relaxation as a local probe. Both low density forms, HGW and LDA-II, show similar spin–lattice relaxation but differ in the thermal stability with...

Structure of a new dense amorphous ice.

The detailed structure of a new dense amorphous ice, VHDA, is determined by isotope substitution neutron diffraction. Its structure is characterized by a doubled occupancy of the stabilizing interstitial location that was found in high density amorphous ice, HDA. As would be expected for a thermally activated unlocking of the stabilizing "interstitial," the transition from VHDA to LDA (low-dens...
